This past Sunday Captain Vanity visited First Congregational UCC during children’s time. During the visit, his assistant carried a mirror along side him so that he could maintain his handsome qualities. When asked by one of the children what vanity meant, he looked admiringly at himself in the mirror and said, “Vanity is when you look into the mirror and you realize just how beautiful you are.” Later, Pastor Brooks explained that sometimes Christians can unfortunately be like Captain Vanity. He said, “They only want to admire and appreciate their own religion. They can’t admire and appreciate other religions.” Pastor Brooks encouraged the children to be grateful for the riches of their own faith while still maintaining an appreciation for other faiths.
