Gaza Clinic Destroyed

The death toll in Gaza from the 18-day Israeli military incursion now stands at 925, with an official of the Hamas-run government in Gaza saying about 400 of those have been women and children, Reuters Alertnet reported.
While Israel does not plan to end the offensive yet, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon plans talks with Middle East leaders this week in order to end the stalemate. The US says it will support a humanitarian initiative to help the Palestinians as part of a possible EU-sponsored donors’ conference, Alertnet reported.

CWS ResponseChurch World Service continues to support efforts as a member of the Action by Churches Together International alliance. ACT efforts include those by the Middle East Council of Churches’ Department of Service to Palestinian Refugees (DSPR), International Orthodox Christian Charities, the Lutheran World Federation and Norwegian Church Aid, all long-time CWS partners. As noted in the initial appeal issued Jan. 7, these are initial efforts and will be expanded later as the situation further unfolds. In latest developments for the CWS-supported response: The ACT International coordinator for Gaza, Liv Steinmoeggen, confirms that three truck loads of medical supplies and equipment were unloaded today at Kerem Shalom checkpoint at the Gaza border. The supplies will now be transported to Gaza City, after a security check. If there are no delays and no problems, the supplies are expected to be in Gaza soon and will be sent directly to the Al-Ahli Hospital.
