On April 20th, we will be showing the new film “The Asphalt Gospel.” This documentary is about six ordinary people who left their homes, jobs, and families on Easter of 2006 to walk across the United States from Phoenix to Washington D.C. On their journey, the group promoted a set of twelve Progressive Christian affirmations that included support for the following:
-openness to other faiths
-care for the earth and its ecosystems
-taking the bible seriously, but not literally
-separation of church and state
-affirming that all people are created in God’s image, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered people
-standing with the poor and oppressed
-standing for peace
-affirming the role of faith and science in the pursuit of truth
This movie inspires those who see it with its story of how the walkers affirmed the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered persons in the small towns of rural United States. The responses they received to their message may surprise you. We will gather at 11:15 am this Sunday to view the film. Soup and bread will be provided.
