Elementary age children through high school attend the beginning of the worship service with their families. Following our Children’s Time and the Lighting of the Peace Candle, the teachers will escort the youth to their classrooms. Classrooms are staffed by two teachers who have passed a background check and signed a code of conduct.
The curriculum for K-5 is Godly Play. Godly Play is based on biblical stories using simplified language and special props to bring stories alive. The focus is making meaning through story, wonder, and play and nurturing spiritual lives by honoring the centrality, competency, and capacity of children.
Older youth in middle and high school meet weekly on Sunday during the worship services. They engage in scripture-initiated discussions. Each person is encouraged to question and share observations they see between biblical stories and social justice issues, as well as similarities to their own experiences. The focus this January through May is on Passover, Pentecost, and the beginning of the Christian church. There will be an opportunity to do a presentation and/or skit based on the discussions. The presentation will be a part of a worship service in late May. Each participant will be given the opportunity to take part according to their interest and particular talents. This program is offered with the hope that the youth know they are a valued part of our “beloved church community!”
Additional opportunities for youth include ukulele class and a church picnic in the summer, fall kick-off Sunday, and a Children’s Christmas program.
Fun fact from our Christian Educational Coordinator, Gina Marquardt, “I grew up in this church and have many fun and meaningful memories related to my time here! It has been a joy to have my kids also grow up in the inclusive and caring environment of our church!”
