Unlikely Combinations

Dear Church Family and Friends,

The day after our wedding Eunita and I stayed in Sacramento to spend time with family members who had flown across the country for our special day.  To entertain them, we went to California’s State Fair.  Among the highlights were a thousand pound pig and a miniature version of San Francisco made with over 100,000 toothpicks and Elmer’s glue.  Personally, I was on a mission to have a deep-fried Twinkie.  What I also happened to discover was a new concoction known as “The Zucchini Weenie.”  This battered and deep-fried state fair delicacy consists of a hollowed-out zucchini with a hot dog inside.  Upon discovering this culinary treasure, I declared aloud, “This will have to be the subject of my next church newsletter!”

Why would this make a good newsletter subject?  At the time, I did not really know, except that my intuition told me there was something very profound and sacred about “The Zucchini Weenie.”  Upon reflection, I now more fully realize the wondrous qualities of this specialty-dog.

During the preparation stages for the wedding, I would occasionally worry about how the diverse characters and personalities attending our wedding would all get along.  In other words, would the zucchinis get along with the weenies?  (I won’t tell you who were the zucchinis and who were the weenies.)  As it turned out, one of the stunning successes of the wedding was that everyone got along marvelously-beyond my wildest imagination, in fact.

Like a deep-fried, zucchini weenie combination, sometimes God’s grace surprises us.  Similar to weddings, churches can also throw diverse persons together that would seem unlikely combinations, but through the grace of God, we more often than not get along quite splendidly.  Thanks be to God!  We are all Zucchini Weenies!  Each one of us waiting to be smothered and deep-fried in God’s amazing love!

Your brother in Christ,

Pastor Brooks
